Evan Voytas: Our Thing

leave a comment »

It’s time for another post on Evan Voytas. In a league of constantly releasing new music in a feverish (but genius) manner along with artists such as Blackbird Blackbird, Voytas is blooming into the multi-instrumentalist and pop prodigy of Los Angeles. It should go without saying that if he releases something new, I will be talking about it on here.

Although I had always been a fan of his dreamy electropop soundscapes, I was recently very impressed with a live set from Voytas’ residency at The Echo during October. He and his band (which now includes The Sweet Hurt’s Wendy Wang) sounded so much tighter and fuller than the last time I had seen them. When they opened for Dragonette, it seemed as if they were still a bit shy when it came to stage presence but this time around, there was an obvious maturity and growth in confidence. The change in demeanor was definitely a positive turn around because with the talent, Voytas and his live band are bound to dazzle concert goers for a long time if they keep this up.

Pride is something some musicians try to avoid showing because everyone in the music industry aims to deal with talented people but they also favor the down to earth guy or gal. Being humble is nice but when you’ve got the goods, you should be happy to flaunt them a bit more than you think you can. So, I’m very glad Voytas and company have finally embraced their accomplishments.

Speaking of new releases, Voytas has just released a new EP titled “Tomorrow Night We’ll Go Anywhere” with the recent key tracks being “Our Thing” and the track which shares the EP name. With the former track offering another solid combination of Voytas’ smooth falsettos over some crisp beats, the latter sounds like it got a heavy dose of disco – which sounds great! It’s definitely a fun one to dance to.

Check both tracks out below. Also, if you haven’t checked the latest Wild Tonic mixtape out yet, Voytas’ “I Run With You, Spirit Animal” is just one of the many great tracks included.

Evan Voytas: I Took A Trip On A Plane

leave a comment »

Evan Voytas is a music making machine. He’s always churning out new songs when he’s not playing in Flying Lotus‘ band. The most remarkable trait about him is that no new release is ever a let down. I’m beginning to think it’s impossible for Mr. Voytas to disappoint me. We last heard from him when he released the warm “Sad, Like Hearts Can Be” and now he’s back with “I Took A Trip On A Plane.”

The new track is slightly happier than the previously mentioned, but that doesn’t mean it lacks the contemplative quality he’s known for. While FlyLo’s music has a darker and even fantasy-like quality to it, Voytas displays the other realm with dreamy indie pop layers that only lift you up.

Check it out below!

Evan Voytas: Sad, Like Hearts Can Be

with one comment

Evan Voytas is one of those many musicians in Los Angeles who can go with the flow of just about anything. He’s constantly releasing his own material  – which is electro-pop done right (ie. “Astro” and “Getting Higher”) – but he’s played with a ton of musicians as a backing band member as well. One of his most recent gigs had him playing in Flying Lotus’ second show ever. This Wednesday, he’ll be opening up for the sweet Dragonette at The Echo and you can bet your ass I’ll be there covering it for BeatCrave. So look out for a review soon after.

For now, take a listen to his latest – “Sad, Like Hearts Can Be” below!
