Jens Lekman: The End Of The World Is Bigger Than Love
A while back I posted a remix of Au Revoir Simone‘s “Shadows” by Jens Lekman. The Swedish ukelele-loving singer-songwriter quickly followed that remix up with a mixtape titled Summer In 3/4 Time (which you can find in the sidebar of Summer mixtapes). During that time, I also wondered when Lekman would be making a comeback and I got my answer much sooner than I thought I would have to wait for – which was great news to me. With the release of the appropriately yet dramatically-titled song, “The End Of The World Is Bigger Than Love,” Lekman fans were reacquainted with his melancholic arrangements of swooping samples that come beautifully together under that rich, deep voice.
It was released via free download nearly a month ago but I wanted to post the song anyway because everyone should hear it. He wrote it in a time when he was first lost in hopelessness (surprise, surprise) but it actually ended up being a song full of hope. So you would never guess that its roots came from a sad origin based on the melodies bursting out of each measure. If you haven’t heard it, make sure you take a listen below! You’ll get as sensitive as Mr. Jens Lekman once you hear it.
Au Revoir Simone: Shadows (Jens Lekman remix)
Somehow Brooklyn’s Au Revoir Simone is getting away with being three girls who play synths. You’d think we’d need more than just synths to make a good pop group but with these three lovely ladies, we’re obviously wrong. They’ve already released three albums which have all been pretty successful in the indie realm. They’ve got the attitude (they’re so adorably into their music live), they’ve got the vocals and they’ve got some clever songwriting skills. It can be fun and it can also be beautiful.
However, Swedish singer-songwriter (and mash up artist in his own right) Jens Lekman has managed to take the music of Au Revoir Simone to a whole other level with his remix of their track, “Shadows.” The familiar swooping melodies and grand orchestrations make me wonder what Lekman has been up to lately. The last time I heard about him was when he contracted Swine Flu on tour. This remix is nothing but a good sign he’s doing well but when’s his next album coming out? I hope it’s sometime soon… I used to read up on his blog where he dishes out very, very, very personal ordeals. That’s how I found an awesome mash up of his song, “If I Could Cry (It Would Feel Like this)” with R Kelly’s “Rockstar” by The Hood Internet.
