Teen Daze: Savior

with one comment

Teen Daze has done it again. He’s done another Local Natives remix. We all know how I love these new remixes popping up but, first, let’s take a look at Teen Daze – the artist behind all this music that puts me into to a nice, relaxing and hazy coma.

All the facts we have about this Vancouver-based artist so far is that his debut LP, Four More Years, will be coming out digitally on July 27th and on vinyl on August 12 via Arcade Sound Ltd. That and the fact that he likes being mysterious. He’s only been putting music out since April but even so, all photos are purposely blurred and intentionally marked with “teen daze” in white bold letters blocking all identification. However, this evasiveness won’t last for that much longer. Pretty soon, Teen Daze will be going on tour starting in August and we’ll see who he really is then. For now, we can add him to the chillest of chillwave artists. No pretense – Just dream waves that happen to match some musical notes that are pleasing to both the mind and the ears.

Check the Teen Daze tracks “Savior” and “Shine On, You Crazy White Cap” out below. Don’t worry, I didn’t forget about the Local Natives remix. His rendition of “World News” is also after the jump!

Superhumanoids Music Video: Hey Big Bang

with one comment

I’ve been a fan of Los Angeles-based band, Superhumanoids, ever since someone mentioned their name. It’s pretty unique. I’m not going to forget a name like this. It’s a good thing their name stuck in my head because when I actually went to check their music out, I was very pleased with what I heard.

Walking Sleep (formerly The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra) has been one of the few LA bands to top my list of great local pop bands and although Superhumanoids’ sound drastically differs, they have now joined those few bands at the top of my list. In a large city that is overflowing with surf rock and noise bands, hearing pop done right is always refreshing and it makes me thankful to know that there are a few great groups who know what they’re doing with a genre that has gotten such a bad reputation from mainstream radio.

Superhumanoids excel at smooth pop music that is danceable. There is some sampling but their musicianship through vocals and organic instrumentation all snowballs into a very impressive result. Sarah’s vocals in songs such as “Hey Big Bang” are soothing among the staccato beats and guitar chugs and they’re also great live. I was lucky enough to witness them as the first band of the day to get a crowd dancing at WAVED OUT earlier this summer. If you want to experience their kaleidoscopic pop anthems, they’ll be performing at The Echo on the 12th as part of Mississippi Man’s residency show. They’ll also be performing at Origami Vinyl on July 13 to celebrate the release of their own EP, “Urgency.

Aside from making notable tunes of their own, they’re also great at remixes. They’re always churning out new ones and guess what? They did a Local Natives one! (I told you there would be more of these.) Check their brand spanking new video of “Hey Big Bang” out as well as their remix of “Who Knows, Who Cares” after the jump!

Local Natives: Wide Eyes (Fool’s Gold remix ft. Aristotle Pop A Bottle)

with one comment

I’m getting a little spoiled with all these Local Natives remixes! I’m definitely glad they’ve embraced the fact that other artists love their songs so much that to become a part of their music, these rearrangements are happening. I’ve been pleased with almost all of them as well. I’ve already shared quite a few on here by Teen Daze, Russian Adults and Superhumanoids but you can take a listen to all of the ones that were officially submitted at their official website.

The newest one to surface and quickly become another one of my favorites is the Fool’s Gold remix of Local Natives’ song, “Wide Eyes.” Their rendition is by Lewis Pesacov of Fool’s Gold features rapper, Aristotle Pop A Bottle, which gives the track a very ATL club pulse and basically renames it “Eyes Wide.” It’s pretty slick.

Check it out below!

Local Natives: Wide Eyes (Teen Daze remix)

with one comment

Local Natives are still on a roll in regards to success in the music industry. They’re a band I’ll never get tired writing about because their work ethic comes with a strong consistency. A while back I posted a Russian Adults remix of their song, “Sun Hands,” which is also featured on the latest Wild Tonic mixtape and they, too, have now embraced remix renditions of their songs.

If you’re a DJ who is interested in remixing one of their songs, you can grab the stems on their website and if they like it they’ll gladly post it on their website for everyone to hear. Notable ones that have surfaced through that endeavor are remixes by Suckers, Superhumanoids and Teen Daze. However, Teen Daze’s new remix is the one I have been enjoying the most lately.

Teen Daze, a mysterious artist from Vancouver (mostly due to the lack of info on any member), have slowly been making a name for himself with his own songs of hazy summer goodness. Their remix of Local Natives’ “Wide Eyes” (a song which was featured in May’s mixtape) is a must-listen as it does a great job of draping a laid-back but danceable skin over the organic rhythms we know so well. Check it out below and let me know if you also hear a little Chris Brown-Forever-beat hidden in there, too.

Local Natives: Careful (Television cover)

with one comment

If you are familiar with Local Natives, you are already aware of the fact that any cover song of theirs does justice to the original. (Just take a listen to their cover of “Warning Sign” off of their debut album, Gorilla Manor.) They’re now back with another cover but this time, it’s off of Aquarium Drunkard’s compilation, L’Aventure.

Aquarium Drunkard, which is run by Autumn Tone‘s Justin Gage, continues to be one of the most legitimate music blogs out there. He was certainly one of the first to take music blogging seriously out here in Los Angeles and he’s done a compilation before called RAM On LA, which had LA artists cover songs off of Paul McCartney’s RAM album. This time time around, the compilation will include covers songs of Television’s album, Adventure. LA artists on this track list include The Henry Clay People. Foreign Born, The Happy Hollows, The Deadly Syndrome, Immad Wasif, Dirt Dress, The Growlers and of course, Local Natives. (Talk about a mega-packed and talented roster!)

You can learn more about the compilation over at Aquarium Drunkard. L’Aventure is a free download but donations would be much appreciated as they are going toward The Silverlake Conservatory of Music. Help the kiddies out!

Grab Local Natives’ “Careful” below.

Local Natives: Sun Hands (Russian Adults Remix)

with 2 comments

If you personally think you know me and haven’t realized that one of my favorite bands in LA is Local Natives, then perhaps you don’t know me at all. Also, if you’re a BeatCrave reader, you may have noticed my shamelessness as I gush over this quintet more than enough on the site.

However, if you were also a fan of Local Natives and had the ability to share great music with the masses, you’d be the exact same way… right? Of course, I’m right. I’m a huge sucker for harmonies and after they changed names from Cavil At Rest to Local Natives and became a band that focused on the vocals more than the instrumentals, they really hit gold with that concept – and only because they can do it exceptionally well. Also, just because they’ve got tight knit harmonies does not mean they lack the musicianship in regards to their instruments. One of my favorite things about Local Natives is the heavy percussion they provide in each song, no matter what the tempo is. Dripping harmonies + pounding percussion = match made in Heaven for this girl.

So, when the rad Sheena Beaston shared this Russian Adults remix with me, I just knew I had to share it with you all. Does it mean a band has made it if they’ve gotten remixed? Maybe. Maybe not. All I know is that I’m pretty stoked about this remix. Check it out below!

Local Natives: Sun Hands

with one comment

It’s been a good year for Local Natives, and an even better year for fans of the fantastic Los Angeles-based 5-piece band. With their love for percussion and rich harmonies, Local Natives have gained a very loyal following here in LA and around the world. (You can read my interview with them on BeatCrave here.) NME even took notice and hooked them up with a UK tour and record label, Infectious, released their debut overseas.

Next year will be a greater year for US fans, since Frenckiss Records recently signed them. This means we fans State side will be able to get our hands on their full-length, Gorilla Manor, on February 19. Finally!

The album features well-known tracks such as “Airplanes,” “World News,” and more. However, if you’ve ever gone to one of their live shows, you also know that they had their own 5-track EPs with live tracks courtesy of Daytrotter. One of these tracks was the “Sun Hands,” a track that has become one of my favorites.

Now, there is a cleaner version available from Gorilla Manor and people have probably been downloading it like crazy since Pitchfork recently put the track up on their site. You can listen to it and download both versions here after the jump. Enjoy!
