Wild Tonic Monthly Mixer: June 2010

with 3 comments

July is here and that means I get to share my most-played tracks from June! I hope you’ve been enjoying the past mixtapes because there are some gems in there I wish I had the time to dedicate entire posts to.

Last month’s mixtape was geared toward more electronic-based songs but this month I spent a lot of time listening to a lot of great indie rock tunes such as new ones from Los Angeles’ Seasons who just released their EP, “Winter.” Of course, Australia’s Tame Impala is also included again as they are my most current obsession. I’ve also included another Televsion cover from The Henry Clay People who also recently released an album. You can also find their rendition of “Glory” on the L’Aventure album.

However, for those of you are more inclined to dig the dance tracks -  don’t worry! I got you covered with Delphic’s “Counterpoint” along with a few remixes of some great tunes such as Local Natives‘ “Sun Hands” by Russian Adults and yes – a Rihanna track. Just don’t knock it until you hear this remix. Gentlemen Thieves managed to get me to listen to Rihanna on repeat with their remix of “Rude Boy.” As much as I also like the original, their rendition blows it out of the water.

I should confess something though. I’ve been listening to Wild Nothing’s Gemini quite a bit this past month as well but the track, “Your Rabbit Feet” just surfaced in the last few days via a sold out EP titled “Evertide.” I haven’t really been spinning this track for a month but have a strong feeling that will happen in the near future. I just had to share it as soon as I could. Long live guitar pop!

Wild Tonic Monthly Mixer: May 2010

with 7 comments

Wow, May came and went by fast! I always find a new month’s arrival shocking so it shouldn’t be a surprise that I’m a little behind on this month’s mixtape. Also, when I say this month I really mean last month because each “Monthly Mixer” is a collection of what I’ve been listening to the most in the last 30 days – Hence, the reason I’ve slapped the May 2010 label on it.

This past month I’ve been listening a lot of artists who are more dance-oriented instead of my typical indie rock obsessions, but who says electronic beats can’t rock? Artists included in this mixtape include Two Door Cinema Club, Phantogram, and Holy Ghost! (who will be a perfect opener for Chromeo on tour this summer after they finish touring with DFA labelmate, LCD Soundsystem).

However, you’ve got your share of some great rock tunes from The Growlers, The National, Tame Impala and Free Energy as well. Also, it wouldn’t be a great mixtape if I didn’t include some of my local Los Angeles aritsts on there. Rumspringa, who is definitely one of my favorite LA bands, has apparently dropped original drummer Itaru and added three more band members according to their MySpace. I want to say I’m sad about that but I haven’t heard the new lineup yet so I’ll just remember how great they are with the opening tune, “Shake ‘Em Loose.” The Like, who I’ve seen more times than I can count this past month, are also on there with a new pop tune (a la new producer Mark Ronson) called “Fair Game.” 60 Watt Kid and Robotanists also close the mixtape out with some amazing tracks.

Wild Tonic Monthly Mixer: April 2010

with 3 comments

So! In my attempt to make up for the website lacking in posts due to all the fixing I must do after transferring it from Blogger to WordPress, I am at least giving you the Monthly Mixer today!

I plan on having all the links and photos all fixed for you guys by the end of this weekend. My schedule packed full of shows on top of both the day job and BeatCrave unfortunately hasn’t given me much time to polish the site and make it pretty for you. The good news is that I have SO MUCH new music to give you. Lots of covers, remixes and just some good jams are coming! Just please bear with me for a couple more days.

For now, I hope you take a listen and also enjoy what I’ve been playing on repeat this past month. Although I was (and still am) all about some new Crystal Castles, there have been some other gems such as new tracks from Big Boi and The Black Keys. Also, Avi Buffalo recently released their highly anticipated self-titled album and it’s so wonderful I could cry tears of joy. The record release show at The Troubadour in Los Angeles tomorrow will be a fun one. Also, if you’ve been reading BeatCrave or following me on my personal Twitter account, you may have seen me raving about the Beijing trio, Carsick Cars. They basically sound like Sonic Youth on crack live. Enough said, correct? The mix ends with a stellar track from them as well.
